Categories

Organise your time entries with custom categories in iTimedIT. Filter and report on development, design, meetings, and more.

What are categories?

Categories are workspace-level labels you create to classify time entries. Typical examples include Development, Design, Meetings, Admin, and Research. Assigning a category to a session makes it easy to filter entries by work type and understand how your time is distributed across activities.

Creating a category

  1. Open Settings from the sidebar.
  2. Navigate to the Categories tab.
  3. Click Add Category.
  4. Enter a name for the category.
  5. Click Save.

The category is now available to every member of the workspace.

Assigning a category to a timer

  1. Go to the Timer page.
  2. Select a category from the Category dropdown before or during a session.
  3. Start or continue your timer as normal.

The category is saved with the time entry when you stop the timer. You can also assign or change a category after the fact by editing the entry on the Entries page.

Filtering entries by category

  1. Go to the Entries page.
  2. Open the filter panel.
  3. Select one or more categories from the Category filter.

The entry list updates immediately to show only entries matching the selected categories. Combine with date range and project filters for more precise views.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are categories shared across projects? A: Yes. Categories are workspace-level and apply to all projects within the workspace. Every member of the workspace can use the same set of categories.

Q: Can I change a category after the session ends? A: Yes. Open the Entries page, click the edit icon on the entry, change the category, and save.

Q: Can I delete a category? A: Yes. Go to Settings → Categories, click the delete icon next to the category, and confirm. Existing time entries that used the category will have the category field cleared.

Q: How many categories can I create? A: There is no hard limit. Create as many as your workflow requires, but keeping the list concise makes the category dropdown easier to use.
